1st. Lychees harvest

Well friends, we have never mentioned before the 25 trees of lychees that we sowed together with our mangoes six years ago. It wasn’t because we forgot to do it but also because of the difference between the mangoes of the second year which wanted to bear fruits (we removed that fruits the year before in order to help the tree) give us a great result with an explosion of reddish mangoes in contrast with the green of the tree that you could see in this photo.

We are really close

We still have to wait some weeks for the beginning of the flowering of mangoes full of sugar which are just ready. Just look the size!!!! In this Photo they are around 350 or 400 grammes.

‘Jelly’ fruit

The weather has been cruel with us, but as every year, we have the job well done. After the fertilizer of this year with natural and pure horses manure (3500 or 4000kgs) from some friends stable in Antequera that even they sieved to remove all the straw to use the authentic and pure manure, you can see that the trees are trying to ripen all the fruits, even the smallest ones like in the Photo. We are helping the fertilizer with liquid molasses every 15 days. This year the Harvest will be smaller but with the same quality. You will see!!!

Crazy spring 3rd part

As you can see in the photo, and although it is not representing the 100% of our grove, we have a lot of trees with acceptable bloom. According to the elders farmers in the area, in spring days when the tree is blooming, if the conditions are anomalous for the tree (we mean temperature of course) the weather will decide If this year we are going to have ‘fruit’ or ‘wood’. If finally goes to ‘Wood’, the tree uses all its strength to give new sprouts for future branches and strengthen the old ones. So it has dominated a lot the deep red colour of new sprouts like the yellow flowers in this spring. We estimate a 50% less in product...

Crazy spring 2nd part

We will start to see the first flowers in March or even at the end of February which is common if the temperature is warm (like last year). We usually remove this first flowering manually looking for a second flowering in April and May with higher temperatures and consequently better ‘jell’. This year with soft temperatures nearly until the end of May (18º-21º during day and 12º-15º at night) mixed with windy days every day in last months has meant that flowering is too late and very limited. From the Association of Spanish Tropical Fruit Producers located in Vélez-Málaga, the day 07.18.2013 the local press notified the fear of a ...

Crazy spring 1st part

This year the idiom "spring crazy" is justified by the field reality. During the winter and much time of spring it has rained too much, also the very soft temperatures nearly to the end of May, has not been good for our weak trees which are needed of heat for blooming. This has contributed too much the appearance of more weeds on the farm than in previous years so the work of clearing them has been harder if it is possible. The flowering has been another horse of a different colour...

During spring

Now with the feet of trees clean, we need to clear the scrubs of the farm. During these months of spring until June we clean at least once a month. And soon the beginning of the flowering and the explosion of yellow and red colours with green leaves arrives. I send you some pictures of last year to compare them with this one. Dear friends, we never know about it , but after this soft, warm winter, we will see how it’s going the flowering, and with a bit of luck, this year we will taste wonderful mangoes.

Winter passed

Look at some trees after winter. Soon trees will begin sprouting and flowering hard with the coming of warmer days of spring. If we talk about rains, we counted about 800 liters on the rain gauge of the property, what is great for our well after the few rains of the last year.

Cleaning and fertilizing the trees

In the months of January and February, as every year, we cleaned the foot of the tree and the weeds; we hoe it and add pure horse manure (10-15 kilos per tree). Then we cover it. The rains this year have fertilized everything perfectly. First we clean manually the bad roots and weeds and after that, we clean around the tree to add more or less 10 to 15 kilos of horse manure clean of straw and finally we cover it.

During winter

This year has not been especially hard if we talk about cold and low temperatures, except for some sporadic days in which we were near temperatures of 4-5 degrees. The wind, which has not stopped blowing since October, has almost been a constantly disadvantage. At least in this winter, the wind was not combined with low temperatures so our trees give us a production better than others in those dates
